RESOURCES FOR PLAYERS |
Diddorol is the fictional kingdom that serves as the setting for all 8th grade English Language Arts activities in Barrington (New Hampshire) Middle School's Room 242. It is the geographical component of the storyline of a game overlay, which presents and contextualizes all the usual ELA content in an alternative way.
Each of the six provinces in Diddorol have a corresponding area in the classroom. Each province also symbolizes one of the Six Traits of Writing, and has a "mythology" of its own. |

Rules and expectations in Diddorol
Behavior:
* When it's group work, make sure to include your guild's name, or the names of each of the participants.
* It's ALWAYS a good idea to put the calendar date on your work.
* If you are doing a quest, make sure you put the name of the quest at the top of the paper.
- Hold the ideal of maintaining and presenting your higher self at all times.
- BE PREPARED. AND BE PREPARED TO BE PREPARED. In other words, put your work and all needed tools in a place where you know for sure you can find them, and in a place where you will have them with you where you need them, when you need them.
- KEEP IT APPROPRIATELY NEAT. Of course, rough drafts don't have to be perfect. I don't mind messy, as long as it is legible. When you do a best-shot draft, though, the work must be VERY neat, and written in ink--or, preferably, typed.
- PARAGRAPH PROSE APPROPRIATELY. Real writers paragraph as they write their initial drafts--paragraphing is a signal to readers that a change has occurred, and that signal is often a huge help speeding someone's understanding of the text. Paragraphing is just as important as end punctuation to the reader.
- DOUBLE SPACE. There are exceptions to this, to be sure--for example, when making a list or a poster, writing a poem, drafting in your Wombo, posting on a website, or taking notes--but in general and overall, you will be better off if you get into the habit of double spacing and then do it consistently. Most of the time, work that is not double-spaced will be bounced back...and you'll have to copy it over, double spacing as you go. Don't make extra work for yourself.
- REMEMBER THE ESSENTIALS:
* When it's group work, make sure to include your guild's name, or the names of each of the participants.
* It's ALWAYS a good idea to put the calendar date on your work.
* If you are doing a quest, make sure you put the name of the quest at the top of the paper.
